For a Healthy Community

Home

The Martin Center Website is UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

The Martin Center is located at 3545 North College Avenue, a major thoroughfare for central Indiana’s metropolitan community.   We are dedicated to improving the health and well being of our community.  This is one of the most critical years for the agency in its history – obligations are high and resources are low.  Yet, we continue to make a difference!  The humble surroundings host a full service, certified medical laboratory, in addition to providing an administrative site that hosts diverse programs and services to benefit individuals and families that are impacted by Sickle Cell Disease.  The Martin Center provides screening for sickle cell trait, high cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension, in addition to programs and services that directly benefit those with sickle cell disease.  Martin Center photo.

Sickle cell anemia graphic. Our mission is to serve persons with Sickle Cell Disease and other abnormal hemoglobin conditions, and to increase public awareness about thier conditions, and other health issues that plague our society.  Accountability to the people we serve, educating an unknowing public, and maintaining a high quality, effective delivery system are our primary objectives. Special Thanks to the greater Indianapolis Community for your support on Saturday, June 26, 2010.  Due to your help and support, we raised nearly $25,000 through sponsorship, registrations, pledges, donations, in-kind support and leveraged donations.

Transition takes time.  Like our website, the Martin Center as a non-profit agency, is under construction. We are working to ensure useful information is provided to our clients, our partners, our volunteers, our funders and our community.  In the coming weeks, you will see a new look and a new approach to communication.  Until then, we invite you to join us as as we work to assemble a team of committed volunteers and community members who can help those who are already engaged in making a difference.  Our monthly support group will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010.  Each month we are working to provide more activities and resources for our youngest members, as our families share information, exchange helpful life tips and make plans for an active and exciting future.  We have a rich history of service and support.  We believe, the best is yet to come.

With Gratitude and Appreciation,

The Martin Center, Inc.

Martin Center 5K Walk & Run

5K Walk & Run, June 21.The Martin Center hosted over 350 walkers for the 14th Annual walk to benefit Sickle Cell Patients on Saturday, June 26th, 2010. With clear weather and committed participants, the organization was able to yield the most exciting event in recent history. The volunteer efforts of over 100 community members, joined with a loyal steering committee of 15 to ensure organizational success. Retiring Executive Director Susie Davie shared her joy, “This really is a very good year. We were able to reach our sponsorship goal of $15,000 and we have laid a really strong foundation.” Honoring loved ones through memorial signs, t-shirts and displays, many organizations have been an active supporter of the walk for over a decade. As donations continue to come in, proceeds are nearly $25,000.

St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, The Links, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.(AMO), Covenant Community Church, The Health Foundation, Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center and Professional Maintenance of Indiana were among the early champions of this years event. Through personal ties to loved ones, passionate support for the programs and services and a desire to honor the legacy of various community heroes, local sponsors strengthened the event which completed its 14th year. James Fletcher, a key organizer for the walk has been active for more years than he can count. At one of the final committee meetings Fletcher indicated, " We just all have to do our part. If we all put forth the effort it all turns out okay. More people need to know just what they can do to make it happen." Fletcher dedicated over $500 from an earlier birthday celebration to the event.

First time supporters included Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers, Vision of Essence, Emerging Pearls Foundation, Simons Bitzer & Associates and Citizens Energy. Chi Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was recognized as the largest supporter based on the group of walkers & donations assembled, a distinct honor that included walk sponsorship, 70+ registered walkers, over $1,200 in donations, a donated landscaping impact for the agency, support for the first Kids Zone at the walk, and extensive volunteer hours. LaWanda Ward represented the organization and shared her excitement regarding the honor, “Community service is the signature that we want to be known for. Greater than any one event or activity, we felt like we could make a difference by combining our Global Walk Initiative with a group that needed help. We can’t wait to do more, but over $4,000 in direct support is a really good start.”
